Checkpoints
After being introduced to our club and you have signed up for your events a series of checkpoints will be held to assess your knowledge of the topics presented in your selected events. These checkpoints will allow us to monitor your performance and growth as the season goes on. Each study event will have its own checkpoint test, and members may take up to two tests per day. Earlier checkpoints will be shorter, allowing students to explore multiple events before committing.
Conflicting events will have their checkpoints run at the same time, allowing for a competition-like schedule. There may be scheduled makeup days if needed.
Study event checkpoints will be in written-test form, and build events will require you to demonstrate your design. Hybrid events may also require a lab or device demonstration.
More information will be posted at the beginning of the school year!
Invitationals
Our team participates in several invitational tournaments throughout the season. Invitationals give students an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned, while competing against students from other schools.
Invitational that take place before initial team formation are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Students sign up for these invitationals as registration opens and compete in their respective events. Teams are formed primarily on a first-come-first-serve basis, but we may consider previous invitational performance and attendance as well.
Invitationals mainly serve as preparation for our team. We may move students between teams to improve performance and test combinations that yield better results. Performance in these invitationals is the primary factor in determining our team for the later part of the season.
Some of these invitationals have very high demand and we may not be allowed to bring all our teams. We ask that members and families understand the considerations we make when forming these teams. In the interest of optimized team performance, we consider multiple factors when making the team roster.
Regional, State, National Tournaments
Students from these inaugural teams will have the opportunity to be placed on one of 3 teams for the Michigan Region 6 Tournament, typically held at the Detroit Country Day School in early-March.
Novi High School has consistently advanced to the State Tournament since 2021 as a result of strong performance at the Regional Tournament. The Michigan State Tournament will be held at Michigan State University in April 2026.
Novi High School will have the chance to earn a bid to the National Tournament by placing in the top 2 teams in the Michigan State Tournament. For the 2025-2026 Science Olympiad season, the National Tournament will be held at the University of Southern California.
All dates and locations are tentative and subject to change. Most dates will be released within 2 months of the competition. Contact our officers if you have any questions!
